Echorain was busily sorting herbs when Goldstar came in. The pretty silver she-cat smiled and glanced up, tail waving a greeting to the leader. "Echorain, greetings." Goldstar dipped his head respectfully. "Are the other medicine cats here?"
Echorain pushed a borage lead into the correct pile. "Dragonmoon is about, but Dappledshade took Phoenixpaw out gathering, and I actually have not seen Sunfeather all morning." admitted the young medicine cat. Goldstar frowned slightly to hear his sister was missing. It wasn't entirely unlike her, he just wished she would tell at least her fellow medicine cats before leaving camp.

Dragonmoon was lying in her nest, resting her twisted, stiff limb when Goldstar entered the Medicine Den. The colour-point huffed a sigh before getting to her paws, limping of to Echorain and her Leader. "Hello, Goldstar, something bothering you?" the she-cat inquired, yawning widely. Where was her mentor? She'd awoken this morning to find the other she-cat missing, though she knew she shouldn't worry for awhile yet.

((OOC| The medicine cats are meant to get some sign from Starclan that Opaleye is the choice for the next leader, instead of older and more experienced Warriors Ideas?)) "There is." Goldstar replied gravely, pleased to see Dragonmoon. Since she had received her full name, he had been watching her - she was confident, calm - ready to take her full place among the Rootclan medicine cats, when the time came. He couldn't know how soon that time was. "Rootpelt has decided to retire." He explained, knowing he would miss her guidance - sharp tongue aside!

OOC: Hum.... It could be like the 'message' about Mothwing for the next Medicine Cat. An opal left somewhere? Outside the leader's den, or in Goldstar's nest? Or maybe a dream to do with an opal or.... something
IC: Dragonmoon tilted her head, curious about why the usually happy leader would sound so grave. The colour-point sat down, curling her tail around her paws, listening to the old tom. "Rootpelt has served the Clan well for many seasons, I'm sure she's had a long, hard think about her decision." she mewed, trying to condole him. The next deputy... was that why he was hear?

((OOC| I love there being an opal outside Goldstar's den! And the medicine cats might also know - that finding a sign outside the leader's den indicates how early Opaleye will have to take over the leadership.
The opal might even stick around.. maybe a 'symbol' that could be treasured, or stolen by someone evil, that sort of thing!))
Goldstar dipped his head in agreement. "She has indeed. She was a fine deputy, and the clan flourished under her leadership." Truely, he had never felt fitted for this task - he had always relied so upon Rootpelt's expeience. "Now I must choose her sucessor... I msut ask, have their been any signs from Starclan?"
"I have had none." Mumured Echorain, then took a single pace back and looked to Dragonmoon. Ever slightly on her own plain, was the sailver tabby, as if there was even an invisible barrier between she and her fellow Medicine Cats.

Dragonmoon shook her head, " I've received none, either, and I'm sure any of the others would tell you if they had received one. All we can really do now is let you think over this yourself. Are there any cats you had in mind?" The silver-faced colour-point sat down, leaning to one side. Signs... Had she received any? StarClan had proven before that they had strange ways of giving messages. OOC:... And you just gave me an idea *light-bulb*

((OOC| Shaaaare!))
Goldstar nodded, looking rather troubled. "There are some... it is a difficult choice. I am not as young as I used to be... the cat I choose might well wind up the leader of the clan before too long."
Echorain gave a few swift purrs, flicking the golden-furred tom with her tailtip. "It isn't like you to be so fatalistic, Goldstar. Have faith in yourself- and in Starclan. We will watch for a sign."

OOC: Wellzness, since Icestorm's meant to become leader of HillClan one day, what if, somehow, that lil' ol' opal ended up in HillClan and Icestorm finds it? If HillClan's Medicine Cats knew about the opal with Opaleye/star beforehand, or had received some message about it, then they'd know she was to be the next leader. oxo.... Its silly now that I think about it X3
IC: Sympathy touched Dragonmoon's blue eyes, and she lightly nudged Goldstar, "Stop thinking such silly things. All will be fine as long as StarClan is watching over us."

A small pink nose poked into the den, twitching nervously. After a moment a cream and red head followed it, ice blue eyes focusing on the two cats in the den. Forcing a smile, Fawnpaw limped into the den, favoring her front left paw. A few drops of blood splattered to the ground from the injured paw. She'd never really been in the den before, and wasn't sure what to expect.
"Um...Sorry to interrupt..." the flame point stammered. "I uh...Cut my paw on a rock while hunting..." How embarrassing, that she didn't see the rock right in front of her. Hopefully these cats wouldn't scold her the way her mentor did every time she messed up.

((OOC| Actually that could really work - when Hillclan's territory is being converted, and Rootclan put them up in their territory... it can be a sign their lives will meet for a time! What if Fawnpaw found the opal? (She's going to be the open third meddy spot, it could be a sign to the others that she's the one to be chosen?) Then when Talonstripe went to Huillclan, he could steal it, trying to disrupt the leadership of Rootclan?))
"Don't worry about it Fawnpaw." Murmured Goldstar, gesturing with his brushy tail for her to come in. "I'm sure our medicine cats will tend to you. I'm about done here - we'll talk more later." He nodded to Dragonmoon and Echorain and stood to leave.

OOC: *thumbs up* I like it.
IC: Dragonmoon got to her paws, limping over to the flame point Apprentice. "No need to apologize. Show us your paw." she purred, her blue eyes flicking to Goldstar, "I'll come check on you when I'm done, see if we can come up with anything to help your decision."

((OOC| I'm not trying to rush you guys but if Fawnpaw and Dragonmoon could find the opal sign soonish? *puppy eyes* Peo, if you want, you can have Fawnpaw have found one and brought it in to ask the medicine cats about in this thread, if you want her involved ) Goldstar gave a final nod and slipped to the outside branch, lifting his chin and feeling the breeze ruffle his thick fur. Soon the colder season would arrive, and Rootclan would again work harder than ever to get the clan through leafbare. He only prayed to Starclan his leadership would be enough.

(OOC: No problem, I'll have her find it now.)
Fawnpaw sat down in a nearby nest, holding out her injured paw. There was a shallow gash across the pad, but it was bleeding quite a bit. "I was chasing after a mouse..." the apprentice mewed weakly. "I didn't get it."
As she settled more into the nest, she made a face. What was that poking into her side? Turning away from Dragonmoon, Fawnpaw rooted around in the moss for a moment and pulled out a small, round opal. Setting it down in front of Dragonmoon carefully, she asked, "How'd this get in here? There was a little rock in this nest."

Dragonmoon nodded, casting a quick glance at Echorain before limping to the back of the den to collect the needed herbs. The crippled she-cat returned to the Apprentice, putting down the poppy seeds and cobwebs, her blue eyes drawn to the small opal Fawnpaw had discovered. The Head Medicine Cat Apprentice paused, gently pawing the beautiful stone. StarClan... Is this a sign? Opals were extremely rare to find... So hiw else could one have gotten into the den?

Fawnpaw tilted her head, studying the stone as well. A small drop of her own blood was drying quickly on the surface of the opal. Not wanting the pretty rock to be stained, Fawnpaw licked it off carefully. "Do you think it means something?" she asked the medicine cat politely. "Is it...Quartz, or something?" Fawnpaw wasn't much of an expert on rocks and minerals.

Dragonmoon shook her head, lightly nudging Fawnpaw's injured paw. "No, its an... opal, I believe. Show me this paw of yours, little miss." the Apprentice Medicine Cat's voice had started as a murmur, before quickly changing to a light, demanding tone as she nudged her paw again. Opaleye... She's the only cat in the Clan named after an opal... Changing the subject just as quickly as before, the colour-point raised her blue eyes to the entrance. "It could be a sign... Echorain, do you want to treat Fawnpaw or go tell Goldstar about this little stone here?"

Echorain knew it would be harder for Dragonmoon to climb higher up the tree with her leg, but diplomatically refrained from mentioning this. Besides, she trusted the other she-cat completely. She'd long since received her full name, and was as capable as Sunfeather herself was.
"I'll go. I think you're right, it could be a sign." Privately Echorain wondered with a bemused sort of interest why it had been Fawnpaw, and not one of them, to find the opal. Perhaps in itself, it was a sign...
She headed outside, scaling the branches that were home to Rootclan, up towards Goldstar's den.

Fawnpaw lifted her paw again, her eyes still wide with amazement. If it was really a sign from StarClan, then she had been right here to see it! In fact, she had even found it. Well, at least she had done something useful today...She didn't think to wonder why it had been her finding the stone, rather than one of the medicine cats.
"What could the opal mean?" the flame point asked curiously, her eyes roaming around the den and taking everything in.

Dragonmoon watched Echorain leave, before returning her attention to Fawnpaw. Carefully cleaning some of the blood off the Apprentice's paw, the colour-point answered, "Possibly who our next Deputy could be." Retrieving the cobwebs, the Head Medicine Cat Apprentice wrapped them tightly around Fawnpaw's paw, "Bite down on your paw to stem the bleeding." she instructed.

Fawnpaw did as she was told, applying pressure to the injury to stem the blood flow. Already it had been starting to clot, but there was no harm in a little extra attention. Meanwhile, her thoughts were swirling. The next deputy? What about Rootpelt? She was afraid to pry anymore though; it wasn't really any of her business.
"What's it like being a medicine cat?" she asked instead, trying to start a conversation.
