Copperstar was glad once she reached the top of Rustrock. The ticked brown tabby felt a tremble rise to her thin limbs and sat hastily, bracing one forepaw against a half-sunken pipe. That was all she needed, a fall from Rustrock during a ceremony.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here beneath Rustrock for a clan meeting."
She remembered the conversation the previous day, when she'd visited her ailing deputy in the medicine den. She'd learned two worrying things - Mousetail was missing, and they would soon in desperate need of new medicine cats. And secondly, from the worry in Dusktail's golden eyes, he never expected Ratfang to recover. I'm no good as deputy like this, Copperstar... you must keep Tunnelclan strong. And you know which cat can do that right now.

Shimmerpelt was, as usual, one of the first to bound up to sit as close to the front of Rustrock as she could. The warrior gazed up at Copperstar, body straight and rigid as she sat tall. She knew, of course, that Ratfang was in the Medicine Cat Den. And she believed firmly that so long as he was sick, he was of little use to the clan. These dark thoughts she kept hidden beneath more benevolent thoughts - he had wisdom for the clan, of course. But smoldering beneath those, she knew he was another mouth to feed and another cat using up herbs.
Would Copperstar see this and appoint a new deputy? Shimmerpelt felt torn - she knew she was ready, but she was not sure the clan would see her the same way. She was experienced but younger than several other just as experienced warriors; why, she had only met Rootclan's leader at their last Gathering. But she knew she had proven herself.
She stared up, trying hard to disguise her anticipation. She just wanted to prove Tunnelclan was the strongest, and she would do that no matter what position she held. She was confident in this belief.
Twigstripe lumbered toward Rustrock, but did not approach too closely. His hearing was remarkable and he could hear the leader from the back. He did not wish to block anyone's view or make them uncomfortable, an effect he believed he'd heard he had on others. He remained on his paws, watching with unblinking eyes. He only understood a fraction of what went on at these meetings, but he knew he ought to look interested, right?

Wolfkit hopped out of the nursery, wondering what was going on. "Oh!" she squeled in delight, "A cerimony!" The four moon old kit bounded up to the Rustrock and settled herself down almost in front of it, but so she could still see the leader, Copperstar. "I wonder what's going on," she murmered to herself.

Copperstar began with a regretful voice. "Some of you know already that Ratfang has been taken ill. He has caught whitecough, and he feels he is no longer strong enough to serve as out deputy. He has asked for his retirement" She stated quietly and presciently. Mortality... creeping closer for all of them. "And so, I say these words before out warrior ancestors, so they, and Ratfang, can see and approve my choice. Shimmerpelt will be the new deputy of Tunnelclan."

"Shimmerpelt! Shimmerpelt!" Blindfighter called out, acnologing the new deputy, her white fur layed flat on her back, her yellow eyes glowed. It was always exiting when a new cat became deputy, but it was sorrowful when an old one died or retired. OOC: Trying out for Medicine Cat here

Havocstorm strode into the camp confidently in time to hear the new announcement. He blinked a few times, both in confusion and to let his eyes adjust. Sure everyone knew Ratfang was in the medicine den, but Havocstorm was still surprised to hear he wouldn't be deputy anymore. Oh well. Life goes on.
"Congratulations, Shimmerpelt!" the huge smoke tom rumbled, coming to stand next to the newly appointed deputy.

"Yes, conragulations," Blindfighter mewed padding over to the new deputy as well, "What's it like to be a deputy?" She knew it was a trick question, Shimmerpelt had only just become the leader's back up.
"Congrats!" Wolfkit purred, bounding over to Shimmerpelt, "I bet your really exited!" She stopped just before crashing into the gathering cats.

"Conrats!" Birchkit and Graykit called together, both pausing afterwards to glare at each other. Both not over there little fight, however both seemed tired of the not talking to the other. Twitching his tail dismissively Graykit turned back to there leader.
Still glaring Birchkit turned his eyes to there leader as well, although he seemed more then ready to launch himself at his friend.

Dusktail's golden eyes glowed slightly, a distant, knowing look on his face. It was impossible to tell by looking at him exactly what he was feeling... it could really, have been anything. "Shimmerpelt." It was more of a statement than an actual cry, but the Head Medicine Cat's voice blended with the others nonetheless.

Shimmerpelt blinked and nodded when she heard Copperstar's initial decision. Ratfang was just as intelligent as Shimmerpelt knew. But it sounded as though Copperstar hadn't felt the same, a realization the cold she-cat acknowledged to herself with just a flick of her tail tip. She had little time to reflect on it, though - she heard her name called through the air, then repeated by the others in the clan.
Shimmerpelt stood, nodding. She appeared just as unruffled as before - but pride swelled up in her chest. They knew. They understood. She stalked up proudly to Rustrock, nodding to Copperstar. "I thank you for this honor, Copperstar, and I will defend this clan as I have, with my life. I will make the entire clan proud." Her eyes gleamed with her words. If only they knew how proud she could make them, all of them. She wanted Tunnelclan to rise.
She turned as other cats pressed around her, nodding to each in turn. She waved her tails at the kits. They were the future of Tunnelclan. "Thank you all. Yes," she said to Wolfkit. "I am quite excited." She glanced to Blindfighter. "So far, quite wonderful. I will give you a better assessment when I have more experience, though," she said. She caught the humor - but treading over humor was really just what she did. She turned her gaze to Havocstorm. There was one not like that. She blinked at him and his confident stride. "I thank you, Havocstorm."
Her eyes did not stay steady on the cats around her. She glanced about for her sister, Dawnhaze. Now it was even more important to keep the quiet warrior strong.
